Laser & IPL Treatments

Laser & IPL Treatments

At Evolve we are proud to offer treatments using the Deka Synchro Replay Laser.  This laser system is the quickest and most powerful laser currently available in Australia.  Equipped with both the Alexandrite and Nd Yag lasers and an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) attachment, our system is able to perform a wide range of treatments.  As these therapies can lighten freckles and moles, you may undergo a complimentary skin check by Dr Brown prior to your treatment to ensure there are no dangerous potential skin cancers present.  Without this skin check, a skin cancer could be lightened and be much more difficult to detect.

How Do Lasers & IPL Work?

Lasers and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) devices emit flashes of light that are absorbed by specific chromophores (coloured cells).  The light energy is then converted to heat energy when absorbed by its target, damaging it to give the desired result ie hair is removed, pigmentation or vascular lesions are reduced.  The laser's beams are designed to penetrate specific depths of the skin and are at a particular wavelength to be specifically absorbed by the targeted molecules to avoid damage to surrounding areas. The Alexandrite and Nd Yag lasers operate at different wavelengths so we are able to tailor your laser treatment to your skin shade and concerns.

Are Laser & IPL The Same?

Laser and IPL are not the same.  Lasers emit light at a particular wavelength, this means that it is only absorbed by specific target chromophores.  IPL emits a broad spectrum light, with multiple wavelengths.  Filters can be applied to the IPL to refine the wavelengths emitted to reduce damage to non-targeted cells.  Many therapists will refer to IPL as laser, however the two categories are different.  Each individual is different and has different concerns, which is why we offer a variety of platforms to tailor your treatment to you.

What can be Treated?

At Evolve we are able to use light based therapies to treat a wide range of common skin complaints, such as:
  • Permanent hair reduction
  • Photorejuvenation
  • Acne treatment
  • Pigmentation
  • Facial spider veins (red telangiectasia)
  • Rosacea
  • Fine lines
  • Sun damage
  • Leg spider veins
  • Skin Tightening
  • Fungal infections
  • Warts

Laser Hair Removal

The pigment in hair is melanin, both laser and IPL emit light that is absorbed by melanin. Hair that is in the growth phase will be heated and the follicle damaged, usually resulting in it ceasing to grow hair. Not all hair is in the phase suitable for laser or IPL treatment at one time, therefore multiple treatments will be required. The number of treatments and time between treatments depends on many factors including the area treated and device used. At Evolve we have a Nd YAG and Alexandrite laser, which means we can safely treat all skin types. Our laser is fast and effective for hair removal in all skin types, spider veins, pigmentation and skin tightening.  For hair removal treatments, please shave the area prior to your appointment. Within 24-36 hours is ideal.

Fungal Infections

Fungal skin and nail infections can be extremely difficult to get rid of and some of the medications used to treat the infections are harmful. Using our Nd YAG laser we are able to penetrate the skin and nail and heat the tissue to a temperature that kills the infection leaving the surrounding skin and nails undamaged. Studies have shown that some oral medications only have around a 50% success rate, while the Nd YAG laser treatment has around 70-80% clearance rate. 4-8 treatments are required once a week. All fingernails or toenails will be treated even if the infection appears to be only in one nail to avoid reinfection.

FAQs

What Happens Before My Treatment?

You will undergo a pre treatment consultation. During this time your skin will be assessed and the results you wish to achieve will be discussed to determine the appropriate machine settings for you. If required you will undergo a skin check by Dr Brown. A health questionnaire will be provided for you to fill out and any questions or concerns you have can be answered. You will also undergo a test patch to ensure there are no abnormal effects. For hair removal please shave 1-2 days prior to your treatment.

What Happens After My Treatment?

After the treatment there is generally slight redness, much like a sunburn, and can be a small amount of swelling. Some people experience slight flaking or crusting of pigmented lesions a few days after. If this occurs do not pick at the area, let the skin slough away itself. Your skin will feel tight for a day or two afterwards. You are able to wear mineral make up straight after the treatment if required. Sunscreen and protection of the treated area from the sun is vital. Treat the area like a mild burn, avoid heat near the area for a day or two.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

This is highly variable and individual results will vary. For skin rejuvenation it is recommended you have 3-5 treatments around 3-4 weeks apart. You will see results after just one treatment, but to obtain optimal results you may require more. Hair removal can require from 4 to more than 10 treatments to achieve desired results. It is important to come consistently for the first few treatments in order to treat all hair when it is in the anagen phase.

Contraindications

Light therapy treatments should generally be avoided during pregnancy as there is no data regarding its safety. Dark skin tones are not suitable for IPL treatments, but will be able to be treated with our Nd:Yag laser. Persons with photosensitivity or a history of skin cancer are not suitable for IPL treatments. Medications and homeopathic treatments such as Roaccutane, doxycycline, tetracycline, St John's Wort, Retin-A and other photosensitising agents may need to be ceased for some time prior to treatment. This will be discussed with you in your pre treatment consultation.
