Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers

How Do They Work?

As we age our face loses volume, the subcutaneous fat pads are reduced and the facial bones are resorbed. This process starts as young as at the age of 25 and leads to sagging skin which creates lines and creases.  Dermal Fillers may be used to correct this problem or to enhance features such as lips and cheeks or fill in lines such as nasolabial folds or fine lines.  We use Dermal Fillers made from hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies, in a stabilised gel. They are injected into the treated area via either a series of injections or a cannula under local anaesthetic. The treated area is volumised, in addition the filler attracts water, which hydrates the area from within. Dermal fillers can also be used to fill deep wrinkles that are resistant to treatment with Botox or Dysport.

How Long Do They Last?

How long the filler lasts depends on the individual's metabolism of the product and the product used as different consistencies are appropriate for different treatments.  On average the results will last from 4 - 12 months, depending on the type of filler used, the area it is injected into and the individual's metabolism.  Results are usually seen instantly. In addition, the product stimulates the production of further collagen in the treated area, giving lasting improvement.

How Long Does It Take?

Depending on the area treated, the procedure usually takes 20-40 minutes, however local anaesthetic cream or injections may be applied prior to treatment which may require 5-10 minutes to work prior to commencing the treatment.  There may be some swelling and possible bruising after the treatment.  Ice should be applied over the few hours following.  Antibiotics may be given after the treatment to ensure there will not be an infection if indicated and prednisone may be given if swelling is an issue.  Swelling should subside over 24-48 hours. Injection sites should be kept clean.
